LECTURES

All meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month except July, August and December at 10.30am in Potten End Village Hall.

Coffee is served 10.00 - 10.20am.

Visitors are welcome on prior application to the Secretary.
Donations are welcome.

The Golden Age of Painting in Spain
Starting with a brief look at El Greco’s contribution to painting in Spain before concentrating on the great artists of the 17th Century: Velasquez, Zurbaran, Murillo, and ending with Goya’s tapestry designs and portraits.

Rembrandt – Family, Faces and Friends
Rembrandt (1606-1669) provides a wonderful window onto a vibrant city in its Golden Age.

Phantasmagoria – The Gothick in British Arts
Phantasmagoria – a display of fantastic images depicted through the Gothick novel, opera, poetry and Walpole’s house - illustrated with music and slides.

The story of a necklace from its beginnings as a wedding present from Pope Clement to his niece Catherine de Medici to Queen Elizabeth 11. .

The English Country House
Houses chosen to reflect the important moments in the evolution of style - Hardwick Hall, Wilton, Blenheim, Houghton, Keddleston etc. (Where possible reference will be made to houses within easy reach of the lecture venue.)

Princely Courts and Porcelain Secrets
Chinese porcelains arrived in Europe in bulk on the 17th Century ships of the Dutch East India Company, signalling the renewal of the European quest to discover the secret of porcelain manufacture led by Meissen.

Samarkand and the Silk Road
We are introduced to the making of silk, the history of the 8,000 mile route of the Silk Road - the great cities of Khiva, Bokhara and Samarkand, with their glorious tiled buildings - minarets, domes and palaces, the great mosques and madressehs of Islam as well as the Observatory of Ulug Beg.
